Nehru Trophy Boat Race

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an annual boat race held in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzza, Kerala. The event is held on the second Saturday of August every year and is considered one of the most popular snake boat races in the state. The race is named after the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, who visited Alappuzha in 1952 and was so impressed by the boat race that he donated a trophy to be awarded to the winning team.

The race is traditionally held between the chundan Vallam (snake boats) from various villages in Alappuzha. These boats are long and narrow, and are manned by over 100 rowers. The boats are decorated with colorful flags and umbrellas and are accompanied by music and cheers from the crowd.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is not only a sports event but also a cultural spectacle. The whole event is a grand display of Kerala's rich culture and tradition. The event is also a major tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors from around the world to witness the excitement of the race and the colorful spectacle of the boats. The Kerala Tourism Department promotes the event as one of the major tourist attraction of the state.
